I went up to play Texas Holdem at the Indian Casino one time. The first half hour looked like it was going to be great. I was getting good cards hand after hand. Good cards, but alas, always second best. By the end of the half hour I was short stacked. I had been beaten bad in almost every hand that I played. Miracles were happening on the River card that I knew would not continue. It is disheartening to get beat that way but I knew it could happen and had already fitted the eventuality into my plan. Never ever sit down to play poker without a plan. A good solid plan will keep panic at bay. The first thing that you need to decide beforehand is how much money you are willing to risk. Buy in for half that amount. Contrary to conventional wisdom I always go after the guy with the biggest stack, if I can. He is the most likely to call you with a mediocre hand. He knows that your raise might be a bluff. First because you are on the ropes, therefor bluffing, and Second if he does not beat you. Your stack will just get bigger.
